Hurrying
Metropolitan Anthony of Sorouzh
We are all in the grip of time, but it is our own fault, for time has nothing to do with it. The fact that time flows by and that we are hurrying somewhere are two quite separate things. To be in a hurry- that is an inner state. To act quickly, accurately and to the point- that is something quite different.
Take the following example: It happens that when on holiday in the country one is walking across a field, quickly cheerfully, briskly- and not hurrying to get anywhere, because there is nothing to hurry for. And sometimes one sees a man carrying two suitcases and three bags and is in a tremendous hurry, but is moving at a snail's pace.
Haste lies in the fact that a person wants to be half a kilometre ahead of himself; not where he finds himself but always a little further. And when a person lives like that he will not pray, because someone who is not 'here' cannot pray, and the person who is' here' does pray. That is all there is to it. It seems to me very important.
